Dr Bennett Family Practice reached out to us during a presentation at Calvert Memorial Hospital. They were interested in transitioning to NextGen Electronic Health Records and Practice Management alongside the Hospital. Their practice presented a rare opportunity to build a system from scratch as, at the time, they had only two computers, no server, and no internal Ethernet Network. For Practice Management (PM) they were using Medical Manager by Sage, and utilizing terminals to access the system through phone/modem lines. Our job was to transition them to an EHR-Ready System, replace the terminals with new computers, while still maintaining access to their current PM system.

The project began by working with one of our affiliates to wire the office with Ethernet wiring. We purchased new computers, networking equipment, and a server for the office and began preparation on those while the building was being wired. Once the wiring was completed, we scheduled a weekend when the office was closed to come in and perform the new office setup. During the transition, we removed all of the terminal clients and replaced them with new desktop computers. We installed terminal emulation software and integrated the Medical Manager server into the network to allow users to continue to access their PM software while transitioning to the new system and EHR. Each user was setup with an Active Directory account, and a remote backup system was implemented to keep user data safe. EHR equipment was purchased simultaneously and the whole system was prepped for the transition to EHR.

Dr. Bennett’s office is now EHR-ready and the whole staff is fully trained on their new system. Their staff was wonderful to work with throughout the transition. They were highly motivated and enthused to make the change and enjoyed working with our staff during the days following the installation, learning and exploring the new system. We have continued to work with Dr. Bennett’s office on a quarterly support basis, as we do with all of our clients. We provide continual, 24/7 coverage for their needs and perform routine updates and maintenance to ensure HIPAA/HITECH compliance.
